Best day trips north of Brisbane

1. Get a country fix in Maleny

maleny-lane-day-trips-from-brisbane

Starting off with my local picturesque country town, Maleny. I am so fortunate to live in one of the most beautiful places in South East Queensland, and it’s no wonder it’s one of the most popular day trips from Brisbane. Check out my Best Things To Do In Maleny Guide which features all of our favourite things to do in this gorgeous town.

It’s also the best of the three major towns in the Blackall Range (Montville and Mapleton being the others). I highly recommend visiting Maleny Botanic Gardens & Bird World, perfect for everyone. It’s an amazing place, and home to fantastic views of the Glass House Mountains.

maleny-botanic-gardens-and-bird-world
Maleny Botanic Gardens Bird World

Eat at Maleny Lane, specifically the Hare Krishna stand or Thai stand- the food is so so good! You can’t miss Maleny Chocolate either and simply wonder up and down the main street in town looking at all of the amazing shops – don’t miss Ivory Collective Haus for vintage finds.

Check for the nearby Witta Markets which is on the third Saturday of the month. It’s a proper locals market in a beautiful park and one of our favourite Sunshine Coast markets.

Want to stay the night? Stay at our airbnb complete with a Japanese outdoor bath. It’s country life at its best!

2. Visit the Glass House Mountains

best-things-to-do-in-glass-house-mountains-1

The Glass House Mountains are just sublime. There’s a really beautiful energy around them which we just adore. One of the most famous Glass House Mountains walking trails is to Mt Ngungun (watch my Instagram Reel), which is about a 1 hour return walk to a famous lookout, best done at sunrise or sunset.

It’s a relatively easy walk up hill to the top of the mountain, and takes about 40 minutes to climb to the top! You can read more in my 15 Things to do in Glass House Mountains Guide.

Swing by the Lookout Cafe for breakfast or lunch, it’s beautiful here with a stunning view over to the mountains.

3. Hug a koala at Australia Zoo

Australia-Zoo-koala-cuddle

A trip to Brisbane isn’t complete without visiting the world famous Australia Zoo. This is a zoo like no other, and really sets the bar for animal conservation in Australia. If you’re short on time like we were, check out out guide for What To See At Australia Zoo In 2 Hours.

You can book this Brisbane to Australia Zoo Transfer Bus that will organise a day trip from Brisbane for you.

4. Spend the day in beautiful Noosa

Noosa-australia-east-coast-guide

Noosa is home to the best beaches near Brisbane! The two hour drive from Brisbane to Noosa is worth it for the holiday vibes, gorgeous places to eat and stunning beaches to choose from. Watch my Sunshine Coast Instagram Reel to learn more about my favourite spots.

Head to Noosa National Park to find a slice of paradise at the many surf beaches to choose from. I particularly love Tee Tree Bay Beach and Little Cove Beach which sits between Noosa Main Beach and Noosa National Park.

Some of my favourite places to eat in Noosa include Vanilla or Depot for breakfast, and Bang Bang, and Bistro C for lunch or dinner. If you go to Noosa Farmers Market on a Sunday, they don’t allow dogs FYI.

If you’re driving, head into Noosa Hinterland, and stop by Pomona for the weekend markets, and head to Cooran to Noosa Hinterland Brewery and Kin Kin for the Kin Kin Hotel (both pubs are my favourites in Sunshine Coast). Or pop by the Doonan for lunch in the hinterland.

Check out my 25 Best Things To Do In Noosa Guide for more hidden gems to discover.

5. Shop at Eumundi Markets

Eumundi-Markets-sunshine-coast

If you’re heading to Noosa for the day, you should totally swing by the famous Eumundi Markets held on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The market has been running since 1979 and for good reason! Come here to support local artisans, watch live music and tuck into some fantastic food by local food trucks.

I’d also recommend going to The Doonan for lunch on the way back.

6. Swim with whales in Mooloolaba

swim-with-whales-sunreef-mooloolaba

Did you know you can swim with whales in Mooloolaba during the humpback whale migration? Book the swim with whales experience with Sunreef Mooloolaba during the whale watching season just like we did and you’ll be in for a completely thrilling time.

While it’s obviously not guaranteed that you’ll actually swim with whales, the experience itself is so much fun!

You can otherwise choose from many whale watching cruises instead to enjoy the beautiful beaches across the Sunshine Coast. Check out our Best Things To Do In Mooloolaba Guide for more information.

Mooloolaba also has a beautiful beach, is very family friendly with excellent playgrounds right by the beach.

7. Spend the day at the beautiful Coolum Beach

first-bay-coolum-beach-day-trips-from-brisbane

We love Coolum Beach which is about a 20 minute drive from Noosa national park. It’s funny how most people head straight for Noosa, but forget about the other Sunshine Coast beaches to choose from.

Head to Bay 1, Bay 2 or Bay 3 in Coolum and enjoy secluded beaches. Bay 3 is the quietest sandy beach of the three but all are equally beautiful beaches. If you have a dog, go to Stumers Creek which is located on the far end of Coolum Beach. This is our dog’s favourite dog beach in Sunshine Coast!

Eat at Alley Cat and order the fish tacos because they are soooo good! We also always head to Yum Gelato for some of the best acai in Sunshine Coast!

8. Head to Kenilworth & Conondale National Park

booloumba-creek-conondale-national-park

We love Kenilworth in Sunshine Coast hinterland. There’s plenty to do here, including the famous Kenilworth Bakery which is home to the 1kg donut challenge and coffee donuts. The donuts are amazing and they even do doggie donuts too!

Head over to Kenilworth Dairies and do not leave here without their famous chocolate mousse and mango & macadamia yoghurt. Head over to the Fig Tree Walk which is a beautiful short dog friendly walk and if you have a 4×4, you have to go visit Booloumba Creek (watch my Insta Reel here). Head to campground 3 for the iconic swimming hole which really is amazing.

There are plenty of walking trails to tick off in Conondale National Park, with Artists Cascades being one of the most popular. What is completely underrated is the fact that there’s an Anthony Gormley sculpture in this park. He is one of the UK’s biggest sculptors, and known for creating the famous Angel of the North.

9. Swim at the Sunshine Coast waterfalls

Go waterfall hopping in the Sunshine Coast and explore the beautiful national parks! Here’s some of my favourites which you can also find on this Instagram Reel I made:

  • Kondalilla Falls in Kondalilla National Park (Montville)- 20 minute family friendly walk to swimming hole. Full walk takes 1 hour.
  • Swim at Gardners Falls in the Obi Obi Creek (Maleny) – only a few minutes from the car park

10. Spend the day at the Caloundra beaches

caloundra-best-day-trips-from-brisbane-under-1mb

Caloundra in the Sunshine Coast is a really popular day trip from Brisbane. Being only 1h15m from Brisbane, Caloundra is home to some incredible beaches with epic views of Glass House Mountains and sunset over the beach.

For beaches, head to Bulcock Beach (great for families) or to our favourite which is Moffat Beach.

If you head to Moffat Beach, eat at The Pocket which has great views of the beach here. Moffat is also a dog friendly beach and off the leash after 4pm!

11. Do the Adventure Treetops in Sunshine Coast

adventure-tree-tops-sunshine-coast-day-trips-from-brisbane-under-1mb

Adventure Treetops isn’t just for kids! We took our friends and had the best day out (watch me conquer my fear of heights!). Located in the lush rainforest, it really is a brilliant day out that everyone should try at least once, especially as it’s the largest high-ropes adventure park in Australia!

12. Check out the Bee Gee’s Lane in Redcliffe

redcliffe-day-trips-from-brisbane-under-1mb

Redcliffe is a really popular day trip from Brisbane, seeing as it’s only a 40 minute drive from Brisbane CBD. Home to the closest sandy beach to swim in near Brisbane, you’ll have views overlooking Moreton Island and Bribie Island as well!

One of the most random things to see here is BeeGees Way. They grew up here in Redcliffe before moving to UK but the lane is actually really well done and worth checking out as a tribute to the band.

13. Visit Rainbow Beach

Rainbow-beach-day-trips-from-brisbane-1

Located just under a 3 hour drive from Brisbane, Rainbow Beach is a beautiful place to spend the day. If you have a 4wd, you could drive the Great Beach Drive (always check tides before setting out) and stop off at the famous Double Island Point and Carlow Sand Blow.

If you don’t have a 4wd, you can still drive to Rainbow Beach and walk over to the Carlow Sand Blow for sandboarding down the dunes.

Day trips west and north west of Brisbane

14. Samford & Cedar Creek Swimming Holes

cedar-creek-swimming-holes-samford

We were blown away by the Cedar Creek Swimming Holes in Samford (don’t get them mixed up with Cedar Creek Falls in Tamborine). The 30 minute rock hopping walk takes you to crystal clear swimming hole after swimming hole and is easily one of the best day trips from Brisbane.

You could spend all day here swinging off the ropes into the pools, I’ve been a couple of times now because it’s that good!

Samford is also a beautiful day trip from Brisbane, with plenty of cafes and shops to check out.

15. Visit the underrated Mount Glorious

greenes-falls-mount-glorious

Head up to Mount Glorious for the day which is an absolutely beautiful part of the world. Located just an hour from Brisbane, you’ll feel like you’re a million miles away. I loved the Greenes Falls walk which is just 4.2km and 1 hour return, perfect for families (I saw quite a few on this track). Read my guide for 8 Tips Before Doing The Greenes Falls Walk in Mount Glorious if you’re thinking of going.

I also recommend checking out Northbrook Gorge Walk as well. I’ve not done it yet, but it’s been on my list to visit for a while now. The walk takes you through loads of swimming holes within the gorge and looks spectacular.

And if you have time, visit the Phoenix Sculpture Park (only open on Sundays) and the Lyall Deer Sanctuary nearby.

16. Spend the day in Dayboro

Dayboro-day-trip-from-brisbane

Dayboro is a lovely country town just under an hour from Brisbane, making it an easy day trip if you want somewhere relaxed, scenic and a little bit different from the usual beach or rainforest options. The drive itself is part of the appeal, especially if you go via Samford, with rolling hills, countryside views and that proper hinterland feel before you even arrive.

Once you’re in town, wander around the main street, stop for coffee or brunch, browse the local shops, visit Hay Cottage for arts and crafts, or pop into the Dayboro Art Gallery. There are also country pubs, bakeries, antique-style shops, local markets and creative spaces like The Churn Room in the old Dayboro Butter Factory. It’s a good stop off if you’re heading up to Mount Mee.

17. Hike in Mount Mee

somerset-trail-daguilar-national-park-tips

If you’re looking for the best hikes in Brisbane, definitely head to Mount Mee to trek in D’aguilar National Park. We did the Somerset Trail, which is a 13km walk and takes around 4 hours to complete (watch my Instagram Reel about it). The scenery is incredible, taking you from a forest, to rain forest, eucalyptus forest and epic views overlooking Lake Wivenhoe, Lake Somerset Dam and the mountain ranges nearby.

If you’re looking for a shorter walk, I highly recommend doing the Piccabeen walk which is a 20 minute board walk into the incredible rain forest. We actually did this one by mistake and loved it. Make sure you read our guide for both walks here: 12 Tips For Hiking The Somerset Trail In D’Aguilar National Park.

rocky-hole-daguilar-national-park

I then recommend heading to Rocky Hole in D’aguilar Naitonal Park. We managed it in our small SUV (no 4wd at the time) and the swimming hole is amazing. It almost looks like a movie set, it’s that good.

18. Explore the Scenic Rim

kalbar-sunflower-farm

The Scenic Rim is an absolutely beautiful area to explore near Brisbane, and set in the Great Dividing Range, surrounded by World Heritage-Listed National Parks. Some of our favourite places to visit include the Kalbar Sunflower Festival (check for dates). You can bring dogs along and take some beautiful family photos here.

Continue along and you’ll come to the Scenic Rim Farm Shop which is a beautiful cafe, or head down to Boonah to the stunning Kooroomba Vineyards & Lavendar Farm. You can bring your dog here too!

19. Continue along The Falls Drive in Main Range National Park

browns-falls-main-range-national-park

If you continue along the Scenic Rim, you can do The Falls Drive which is a spectacular drive, taking you to 4 waterfalls and Carrs Lookout (watch my Instagram Reel about it). Queen Mary Falls is the big ticket item here, a breath taking waterfall which takes about 20 minutes to reach the bottom. We also absolutely loved Browns Falls as well, a waterfall hidden from the road but totally worth visiting.

Check out our guides for The Falls Drive below:

20. Visit Toowoomba’s amazing gardens

things-to-do-in-toowoomba

Toowoomba is a beautiful day trip from Brisbane if you’re craving fresh air, pretty gardens and a slower pace away from the city. Known as the Garden City, it’s home to some gorgeous parks including Queens Park, Laurel Bank Park, the Japanese Gardens and Picnic Point Lookout, where you’ll get sweeping views over the Lockyer Valley.

There’s more to Toowoomba than just gardens though. You can explore the street art around the city, visit Cobb+Co Museum, check out the Toowoomba Farmers Market if you’re there on a Saturday, or hike up Table Top Mountain if you’re feeling adventurous.

Time your visit for September and you’ll also be able to experience the famous Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers, when the whole city comes alive with colour. You can find out more in my 30 Best Things to do in Toowoomba Guide.

21. Check out the underrated Stanthorpe

things-to-do-in-stanthorpe

Stanthorpe might be known as one of the coldest places in Queensland, but it really does pack a punch for incredible local produce, wineries and a proper friendly regional town vibe.

You can’t miss picking strawberries at Ashbern Farms or Eastern Colour (honestly the best I’ve had in Australia). The Granite Belt Christmas Farm is excellent, and we’re still dreaming of the delicious apple pie at Suttons Juice Factory. Check out my 50 Best Things to do in Stanthorpe Guide for a full run down as well as this reel.

I also recommend heading to Summit Estate for their sunset evenings, the quirky Mountain View Winery and the famous Ballandean Estate Winery and don’t miss stocking up on fresh local produce from Sams Fresh Fruit Stall on the way home. Considering there are loads of wineries to choose from, check out my 15 Best Stanthorpe Wineries Guide.

22. Go hiking in Girraween National Park

balancing-rock-girraween-national-park

Located near Stanthorpe is the famous Girraween National Park which is a 3 hour drive from Brisbane. Known for the rather scary Pyramid Walk which is home to Balancing Rock, it’s a fascinating and unique Queensland national park everyone should visit. Check out our 12 Best Girraween National Park Walks to consider before coming here and my Pyramid Hike Reel.

Best Day Trips South of Brisbane

23. Visit the oldest national park in Queensland at Tamborine Mountain

glow-worms-cave-tamborine-mountain

One of our favourite day trips from Brisbane is hands down Tamborine Mountain in the Gold Coast Hinterland. Although the touristy street called Gallery Walk is enough to put anyone off, don’t be distracted by this terribly tacky street (watch my Instagram Reel to see some of my favourite places).

Instead, venture off around the absolutely stunning Mount Tamborine and discover some of the best hidden gems near Brisbane making it the perfect day trip from Brisbane for everyone. Read our guide: Best Things To Do In Tamborine Mountain to find out more but you might like to start by checking out these awesome places:

Do The Witches Falls Walk and the Curtis Falls Walk (both are under 1 hour total) and immerse yourself in Queensland’s oldest national park. It’s also worth venturing on the Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk as well.

You also must go visit the Cedar Creek Falls in Tamborine Mountain too, they are way more impressive than we ever imagined they would be. And I can’t not mention the absolutely epic Glow Worms Caves in Tamborine Mountain.

Don’t have a car? Book this Rainforests and Glow Worm Cave: Day Tour from Brisbane tour so you can sit back while someone takes you to all of the best places to visit in Mount Tamborine.

Read all of our Tamborine Mountain guides:

24. Have fun at Movie World (or the other theme parks)

warner-bros-movie-world-gold-coast

Located in northern Gold Coast, you might think the Gold Coast theme parks are just for kids – think again! We spent the day at Movie World and loved it! It totally reminded me of the Disney parks in America and have a fun atmosphere to them. Pluck up the courage and choose from the 27 attractions in the park to experience. You can purchase this 3-day pass or 14-day pass to Movie World, Sea World and Wet N Wild and save on costs.

The most memorable Movie World ride we went on was the DC Rivals HyperCoaster. It’s the longest, tallest and fastest HyperCoaster in the Southern Hemisphere and I just remember Steve nearly being sick which was so funny at the time!

Read my 18 Tips For Visiting Warner Bros. Movie World, Gold Coast before visiting, as I share the complete lowdown on what to expect, how much the day cost us and what to bring with you.

25. Lamington National Park Walks

taloona-creek-circuit-lamington-national-park

Australia World Heritage Area, Lamington National Park is probably one of my favourite day trips from Brisbane!

As the world’s oldest and largest sub-tropical national park and home to Antarctic Beech Forest trees which are believed to be around 3000 years old, this is my favourite national park in Australia. You’ll instantly feel like you’ve entered Jurassic Park here because it’s no wonder that this is a UNESCO world heritage site in Australia.

There’s two entrances to Lamington National Park, which are quite a distance from each other – O’Reillys or Binna Burra. Below are our favourite walks you need to do.

26. O’Reillys walks (Lamington National Park)

O’Reilly’s has the better walking tracks if you’re wondering which side to visit in Lamington National Park.

It really is jaw dropping and super impressive in person. It’s also very family friendly with bird feeding and other activities to join in.

Even if hiking isn’t your thing, the view from the cafe is absolutely wonderful to spend the day getting away from it all. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the incredible views from the park.

If you’re looking for hiking trails, I highly recommend the following:

27. Binna Burra walks (Lamington National Park)

caves-circuit-lamington-national-park

Binna Burra has a totally different vibe to O’Reillys. While I personally prefer the O’Reillys Walks, there are still some amazing Brisbane walks to consider here.

Best Binna Burra walks:

  • Coomera Circuit (7 hours)
  • Daves Creek Circuit (4 hours)
  • Caves Circuit (1 hour)

28. Springbrook National Park walks

purling-brook-falls-springbrook-national-park-gold-coast

Spinrgbrook National Park offers up shorter walks than Lamington National Park, but it’s still absolutely stunning and one of the most beautiful national parks in Australia.

29. Natural Bridge (Springbrook National Park)

natural-bridge-springbrook-national-park-13

One of the most impressive waterfalls in Australia is in Springbrook National Park called Natural Bridge, where glow worms are believed to come out at night here. There’s a gorgeous campground nearby too and the walk only takes 15 minutes return.

30. Best of all lookout (Springbrook National Park)

best-of-all-lookout

Best of all lookout is down the road from Natural Bridge and offers expansive views all the way to Byron Bay. It’s an incredible lookout point you should make the effort to visit.

31. Don’t miss Purling Brook Falls (Springbrook National Park)

purling-brook-falls-springbrook-national-park-gold-coast-drone

You absolutely cannot miss the 40 minute return walk to Purling Brook Falls which is a family friendly walk. It winds down to the impressive waterfall before a gradual incline on the way back up.

It was the first Brisbane hike we did when we moved to South East Queensland because it is so impressive.

32. Do the Twin Falls hike (Springbrook National Park)

twin-falls-gold-coast-day-trips-from-brisbane

Down the road from Purling Brook Falls will bring you to another incredible hike which is a 1 hour walk to Twin Falls.

This is another one of the most impressive walking trails in Queensland which will bring you to two waterfalls you can walk behind. You can continue this walk as part of the Warrie Circuit which is a 6 hour hike.

33. Spend the day on the beach in Gold Coast

Rainbow-bay-gold-coast-day-trips-from-brisbane

While Gold Coast is one of the most popular Brisbane day trips, there’s so much to see here that you could keep coming back for weeks before you see everything!

Rainbow Bay is the best beach in Gold Coast, with loads of little areas you can chill out in without too many crowds. The views back over to Surfers Paradise are pretty amazing without it feeling like the skyscrapers are over crowding you.

I also like Tallebudgera Creek in Burleigh Heads National Park, although it gets really busy or Dreamtime Beach on the other side of Fingal Head Lighthouse which is also dog friendly.

Some activities to consider in Gold Coast:

35. Become a local at Burleigh Heads

Burleigh-heads-gold-coast

Burleigh Heads is one of my favourite spots on the Gold Coast and makes a great day trip from Brisbane if you want a mix of beaches, good food and coastal walks. It has a much more local feel than Surfers Paradise, with trendy cafes, restaurants, boutique shops and one of the best beach views on the Gold Coast.

One of the best things to do here is walk around Burleigh Head National Park, where the coastal track wraps around the headland with gorgeous ocean views and plenty of spots to stop and watch the surfers.

Afterwards, cool off at Tallebudgera Creek, grab takeaway and sit on Burleigh Hill for sunset, or spend the afternoon browsing the cafes and bars around James Street.

36. Swim in Currumbin Valley

cougal-cascades-currumbin-valley-gold-coast

I love Currumbin Valley in Gold Coast. There is so much to see here which you can find in my Instagram Reel. Head to Cougal Cascades for swimming holes that are so amazing, they remind me of the ones you’ll find up in Tropical North Queensland.

I also love Currumbin Valley Harvest as well which is a beautiful cafe. If you’d like to go hiking, check out Gorge Falls Walk which will take you to a beautiful swimming hole.

37. Currumbin WildLife Sanctuary

currumbin-wildlife-sanctuary-day-trips-from-brisbane

Currumbin WildLife Sanctuary is one of the top rated Brisbane day trips! Pre-book your tickets here as it’s one of the most popular Gold Coast tourist attractions. This is the place to come to if you want to feed Australian animals. You can feed kangaroos, take part in the tree top challenge, have breakfast with koalas and much more!

37. Spend the day in Byron Bay

the-banya-best-things-to-do-in-byron-bay

Byron Bay is one of the most popular day trips from Brisbane for good reason. While the beaches are obviously a huge drawcard, there’s so much more to do here than just sit on the sand. We always recommend getting beyond the town centre and exploring the hinterland, waterfalls and nearby villages as well. See my Best Things to do in Byron Bay Guide before you go for hidden gems in the area.

Some of my favourite things to do include walking up to the Cape Byron Lighthouse at sunrise, swimming at Wategos Beach, browsing the Byron markets, visiting The Farm, and heading out to places like Bangalow, Brunswick Heads, Mullumbimby and Uki.

Food-wise, Byron is one of my favourite places to eat in Australia, with standouts including Bayleaf Cafe, The Roadhouse, No Bones and Folk. If you’ve got more time, definitely explore the hinterland as well because some of the best parts of Byron Bay are actually outside the town itself. Check out my Byron Bay Instagram Reel to see more of my favourite spots.

Read my Byron Bay guides below:

Brisbane Islands to Visit

38. North Stradbroke Island

stradbroke-island-october-long-weekend-in-brisbane

North Stradboke Island is a fun day trip for everyone! The passenger ferry takes just 25 minutes, while the car ferry takes 45 minutes to get to from Brisbane. If you’re heading over for the day, I highly recommend taking your car. When we visited, we quickly realised the busses make it more difficult to see everything as they run once an hour. There is 1 taxi on the island and no Ubers so you won’t see much otherwise.

I would also recommend jumping on this day trip North Stradbroke Island tour where you’ll be taken to all of the famous spots and you’ll learn all about it from a guide.

39. Lady Elliot Island

Did you know you can access the Southern Great Barrier Reef from Brisbane? Jump on a day trip to Lady Elliot Island which is honestly one of the most amazing places we’ve been to in Australia.

Home to the best snorkelling you’ll probably ever witness, Lady Elliot Island is home to a magnificent marine park. You might even find whales inside the reef, because it’s that good. Book diving here and if you’re super lucky, you might spot the world’s only albino manta ray which lives here.

The only other advice you should know is, make it an overnight trip rather than a day trip – you won’t want to go home!

40. Tangalooma Island Resort at Moreton Island

day-trip-to-moreton-island

I just loved Moreton Island as the trip was totally unexpected (watch my Instagram Reel about it). You’ll soon realise why a Moreton Island day trip is one of the best day trips from Brisbane (and my favourite), because there’s so much to do here.

Snorkel at the famous Tangalooma Wrecks, go sand boarding, but best of all, make sure you go on the quad bike rides. I’m not even a fan of them, and absolutely loved it!

Most of all, you’ll be surprised how close this island paradise is to Brisbane, because it really does feel like being on one of the Great Barrier Reef Islands. The sandy beaches are excellent, although it will be busy during the school holidays.
