Is Bermagui worth visiting?

This picturesque coastal town is brimming with natural beauty, cultural experiences, and an abundance of activities to delight travellers of all ages. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or a taste of the local flavours, Bermagui in New South Wales has something for everyone.

Home to the incredible Horse Head Rock and the Camel Rock beach, as well as the famous Blue Pool, a thriving art scene and so many beautiful country towns such as Tilba Tilba. Bermagui and the rest of the Sapphire Coast certainly makes for an amazing getaway from Sydney, Canberra or Melbourne.


Where is Bermagui?

Bermagui is located in the Sapphire Coast in the South Coast. If you’re wondering the Sapphire Coast expands for 90km from Bermagui to Eden. Bermagui itself is a 3hr drive from Canberra, 5hrs from Sydney and just under 8hrs from Melbourne.


Best Things to do in Bermagui

1. Check out the amazing Horse Head Rock

One of the most iconic natural formations in the region is the Horse Head Rock. Rising from the ocean, this stunning rock formation resembles the head of a horse, captivating visitors with its unique beauty.

2. Swim at the iconic Bermagui Blue Pool

For a refreshing swim with a scenic backdrop, head to the Bermagui Blue Pool. Nestled among rugged cliffs, this natural rock pool offers a safe and tranquil swimming experience. While I’m sure you’ve seen plenty of rock pools in New South Wales, the Blue Pool has something extra special about it.

Even though it’s not exactly a hidden gem, it feels like it is as it’s hidden from the road. When you see it for the first time, you’ll quickly realise what the fuss is about. There are picnic and toilet facilities here so you can easily spend the day here with the family.


3. Panoramic views at Michael Lerner Lookout

For breathtaking panoramic views of Bermagui, make your way to the Michael Lerner Lookout. Perched atop Gulaga (Mount Dromedary), this lookout has sweeping vistas of the town, main street, harbour, and beyond.

The lookout is also a fantastic spot for birdwatching, with various species often spotted in the surrounding trees!


4. Bermagui Growers Market

If you’re holidaying in Bermagui during the week, head to the Bermagui Growers & Makers Market which takes place on Thursday afternoons from 3:30pm-5:30pm.

The vibrant market showcases an array of fresh produce, artisanal products, and locally crafted goods. Stroll through the stalls, engage in friendly conversations with the passionate vendors, and sample delicious treats. From farm-fresh fruits and vegetables to homemade jams and preserves, the market offers a true taste of Bermagui’s bountiful offerings.

Please note, the market is on a break during the winter months.


5. Visit the Montreal Goldfield

We made a beeline to the Bermagui Hotel for a sunset dinner when we were visiting the town. Located opposite Bermagui Harbour, the hotel is a local institution renowned for its delicious food and warm hospitality.

This historic pub offers a range of dining options, from hearty pub classics to gourmet dishes highlighting the finest local ingredients such as a classic Parmie which is what we had! Pair your meal with a selection of craft beers or regional wines, and immerse yourself in the friendly and welcoming atmosphere.


11. Camel Rock and the surf school

If you’ve ever wanted to catch a wave, Camel Rock Surf School is the perfect place to learn. Whether you’re a beginner or looking to improve your skills, the experienced instructors will guide you through the fundamentals of surfing.

Bermagui is a great place to base yourself on your South Coast road trip. To be honest, now I have done this trip, I would personally stay in Narooma and Bermagui out of all of the places there are to stay on the coast. This is because both places are in a good location for doing day trips and visiting nearby towns and attractions.

Here are just a few of my favourite places near Bermagui you should put on your list to visit.

15. Visiti the charming Central Tilba

A short 15 minute drive away will bring you to Central Tilba, a historic village known for its preserved colonial buildings, boutique shops, and delicious local produce.

Wander through the charming streets, indulge in homemade treats, and soak up the old-world atmosphere. The town looks slightly like a movie set, but it sure is beautiful. We sat outside the pub and loved people watching while having a beer here.


16. Enjoy the stunning beaches in Mystery Bay
