When I found out Montezuma’s Mexican restaurant had been working hard to make their food more vegan friendly by creating a separate vegan menu, I knew I had to try it out straight away!

Vegetarian & Vegan Menu at Montezuma’s

Montezuma’s first started in 1979 in the Gold Coast, and has since grown into a franchise with 16 restaurants now in Queensland, 2 in South Australia, 1 in Victoria and luckily for me, the only one in New South Wales located near my home in Crows Nest, Sydney.

It was the first time I had been to Montezuma’s and once we sat in our cosy booth, we were greeted by a lovely waitress and a vegan bottle of wine, La Boheme which was delicious. It was actually my first vegan wine since going vegan nearly a year ago and from how I remember wine to taste, there was no difference whatsoever, just a really good wine!

For Starters, we decided to order the ranchero, frijoles & guacamole called the 3 combo vegan as well as the nachos. The nachos tasted amazing and seeing as my partner has been to Mexico, he said they tasted like the real deal and best of all they give you extra nachos. It’s like they know exactly how many extra to give you in ratio to the dips, down to the very last one. It was amazing really! The frijoles (whipped beans) had so much flavour to them and the guacamole was probably one of the best I’ve ever had!

For our mains, we shared the San Diego, Tacos and Tostada. The daiya cheese and tofutti dairy free sour cream were to die for, something they certainly got right for us vegans!

Tostada – Corn tortilla heaped with firjoles, lettuce, onions, vegan cheese & salsa

Tacos – frijoles topped with onions, lettuce, vegan cheese and ranchero sauce, surrounded by a crunchy corn of softa wheat tortilla

San Diego – Frijole enchilada, vegan cheese enchilada with spanish rice and salad

For dessert we tried the date cake and the churros. Both were amazing but the date cake was outstanding!

Montezuma’s is an awesome restaurant for a date night, party or family dinner. It seriously ticks all the boxes and it’s incredible that Sydney has a Mexican restaurant that now offers a vegan menu and you can order take out as well!!
