Overview

Nambour feels like a local service town that happens to sit in the Sunshine Coast hinterland rather than a lifestyle village built around visitors. Around 20,900 people live here and the population has grown strongly, up about 21% since 2016.

That growth sits alongside excellent access to schools, healthcare and shopping, with a major hospital only a few minutes away and the airport around 25 minutes. Housing is lower than many coastal and Blackall Range markets, with a median around $910,000 and three-bedroom rents near $725 a week.

The town centre has a retro, slightly scruffy creative streak, visible in street art, vintage shops and live music, but ordinary life is still driven by work, errands and local services. Tourism is relatively low, so the streets tend to feel more like somewhere residents use than somewhere visitors dominate.

The coast is about 25 minutes away and Brisbane around 1 hour 30 minutes, giving Nambour useful regional access without making either place part of a short daily hop. The trade-off is that scenery and rural space are not the main event here. Nambour makes most sense for people who want Sunshine Coast access and a functioning town centre, and care more about practicality and community than polished destination appeal.

Is Nambour for you?

Best for

Strong schools, shops, transport connections and healthcare make Nambour practical for families, healthcare workers, creatives and remote workers. You get Sunshine Coast access without living in either a beach resort or a tourism-heavy hinterland village. The town feels locally focused, which will appeal more to some movers than the polish of a destination town.

Watch out for

The town is not especially quiet or outdoors-focused, and it lacks the strong rural-space feel of Maleny. If the move is mainly about scenery, acreage or a destination village atmosphere, Nambour may feel too functional. Tourism is low, which is a benefit or drawback depending on what you want.

How it compares to similar towns

  • Montville has the gallery, café and visitor polish; Nambour has far stronger everyday services and healthcare.
  • Maleny has more rural character and a stronger food identity.
  • Nambour sits much closer to the airport and coast than either, making it the most practical of the three when connections and services matter most.

The score ranks this region against other regions for the same occupation, not against other jobs here — a low score means it isn't a regional stronghold for that field, not that there are no vacancies. Counts online job advertisements, so trades and farm work hired by word of mouth are undercounted, and outside capital cities this is published at a regional level larger than one town.

Personal is one person's income; family and household cover everyone living together — a single-income household will show a lower household figure than its highest earner's personal one. Personal income also covers every resident aged 15 and over, retirees included, so it reads low in a town with an older population even where household income is solid.
