Maleny feels less like a commuter suburb and more like a small hinterland town with its own daily rhythm. The centre is compact but active, with cafés, galleries and food businesses drawing locals as well as visitors, while the surrounding country quickly opens into green acreage and the Blackall Range.
The population is older, with a median age of 59, and that shows in the strong presence of healthcare, aged care and retail work alongside trades. Growth has been steady rather than explosive, up about 7% since 2016, so the town is changing without losing its established character. Weekends can be busier because tourism matters here, and the wet climate keeps the landscape lush but also means rain is part of normal life.
You can spend a morning in town, then be at a lookout, garden or local producer within a short drive; the coast is about 38 minutes away. Everyday services are unusually solid for a town of this size, including hospital access and schools. Brisbane, however, is roughly 1 hour 30 minutes away, so Maleny works better as a place to live locally than as a base for a daily city commute.
