Overview

Yungaburra is a heritage village on the Atherton Tablelands, set among crater lakes, rainforest and dairy country at about 700 metres above sea level. About 1,300 people live in the village, the median age is 53 and the wider Malanda-Yungaburra area has grown by about 13% since 2016. The village keeps many of its early-1900s buildings and hosts a monthly market and the Tablelands Folk Festival, and platypus can be watched at dusk on Peterson Creek.

Houses have a median of about $750,000 across the surrounding area, above Atherton and Herberton but below the Queensland median. The village has a primary school of its own, with high schools at Malanda and Atherton about 10km away, and Atherton Hospital is around 11 minutes by road. The climate is milder than the coast, with summer days averaging about 28.5C, cool winter nights and about 1,320mm of rain.

Cairns Airport is around 1 hour 25 minutes away and Brisbane more than 20 hours by road. Yungaburra suits people who want small-village life with lakes and forest on the doorstep, and works best for those who can drive to Atherton for bigger shops and to Cairns for anything larger.

Is Yungaburra for you?

Best for

Retirees, couples, artists and remote workers who want a settled village with lakes, forest and a real community are the clearest fit. Families are workable, with a primary school in the village and high schools at Malanda and Atherton. Local work is mostly hospitality, tourism, farming and services, so many residents work in Atherton or are retired.

Watch out for

The village is small and shopping is limited to a FoodWorks supermarket and local shops: Atherton, around 11 minutes away, is the main service centre, so a car is essential. Cairns Airport is around 1 hour 25 minutes away and Brisbane more than 20 hours by road. Rainfall is around 1,320mm and the upland climate brings cloud and damp in the wet season. Visitor numbers rise around the markets and festivals. The population trend covers the whole Malanda-Yungaburra area, so it describes the region rather than the village alone.

How it compares to similar towns

  • Atherton is larger, cheaper and better served, with the bigger supermarkets and the hospital, but has less atmosphere than Yungaburra.
  • Kuranda is more creative and far busier with visitors, and much closer to Cairns.
  • Maleny in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland is the nearest match elsewhere in the state, a cool hill town with markets and a strong community, though it costs considerably more.
  • Yungaburra makes sense when lakes, forest and village life matter more than convenience.

The score ranks this region against other regions for the same occupation, not against other jobs here — a low score means it isn't a regional stronghold for that field, not that there are no vacancies. Counts online job advertisements, so trades and farm work hired by word of mouth are undercounted, and outside capital cities this is published at a regional level larger than one town.

Personal is one person's income; family and household cover everyone living together — a single-income household will show a lower household figure than its highest earner's personal one. Personal income also covers every resident aged 15 and over, retirees included, so it reads low in a town with an older population even where household income is solid.
