Overview

Life in Yeppoon tends to organise itself around the coast without feeling like you have moved into a tiny holiday settlement. The beach and lagoon are right there, boating is common, and Great Keppel Island sits close enough to make island days a realistic part of life rather than a once-a-year excursion.

Underneath that coastal identity is a year-round community supported by healthcare, trades, mining-related work, retail and services. The town has grown strongly, with population up about 22% since 2016, which helps explain why it feels more active than its roughly 19,000 residents might suggest.

The median age is 43 and couples without children outnumber those with children, though families still have decent schooling and practical amenities nearby. Expect warm weather, a humid summer and a noticeable lift in activity during visitor periods. Shopping is useful rather than metropolitan, and Rockhampton-side employment connections matter for some households.

A house median around $850,000 means it is no longer a cheap beach escape. Brisbane is more than eight hours away by road and the airport is about an hour away, so Yeppoon makes most sense when you are comfortable building your life around the Capricorn Coast itself.

Is Yeppoon for you?

Best for

Swimming, boating and island trips can become normal parts of the week in Yeppoon without sacrificing too much day-to-day practicality. Families and people working remotely still have reasonable schools, healthcare, shops and cafés around them. That matters if you want a coastal lifestyle but do not want the compromises that come with a tiny beach settlement.

Watch out for

The main compromise is distance from Brisbane, at roughly 8 hours 15 minutes by road, and the airport is about 66 minutes away. Tourism is still noticeable, and the town will not offer the employment depth or retail choice of Cairns or Townsville. It is coastal first, city second.

The score ranks this region against other regions for the same occupation, not against other jobs here — a low score means it isn't a regional stronghold for that field, not that there are no vacancies. Counts online job advertisements, so trades and farm work hired by word of mouth are undercounted, and outside capital cities this is published at a regional level larger than one town.

Personal is one person's income; family and household cover everyone living together — a single-income household will show a lower household figure than its highest earner's personal one. Personal income also covers every resident aged 15 and over, retirees included, so it reads low in a town with an older population even where household income is solid.
