Overview

Tamworth is a substantial inland centre whose country-music identity is real but only one part of daily life. Around 35,000 people live here, the median age is 37 and the population has grown by about 9% since 2016.

Agriculture, livestock, transport, healthcare, retail and education support a broad local economy, which is why the city can offer strong schools, hospital access and full everyday shopping without relying on a nearby capital. Housing remains relatively affordable, with a median around $650,000 and three-bedroom rents near $500 a week.

The Country Music Festival and Golden Guitar bring a national profile, while equine activity, the surrounding farming region and Oxley lookout give the place a distinctly inland character through the rest of the year. Summers are very hot and winters are cold enough to feel seasonal.

The coast is more than three hours away and Sydney roughly 5 hours 20 minutes by road, so this is a genuinely self-contained regional move. The city is spread out and car use is normal, with less of the compact walkability found in smaller lifestyle towns. Tamworth suits families and workers who want services, space and a functioning job market, and who are comfortable making regional NSW rather than the coast the centre of their routine.

Is Tamworth for you?

Best for

Families, tradespeople, healthcare workers, professionals and people wanting an affordable regional city are strong fits. Musicians and people who like an active events culture will find more going on than in many inland centres. It also suits households that want rural space nearby without giving up major-town services.

Watch out for

Summers are properly hot and the coast is more than three hours away. Sydney is about 5 hours 17 minutes by road, so capital-city trips are occasional. The city is also less naturally walkable and less outdoor-led than compact coastal or mountain towns.

How it compares to similar towns

  • Tamworth is larger, warmer and more commercially complete than Armidale, while Armidale has the stronger university and high-country feel.
  • Compared with Dubbo, Tamworth's music identity and New England setting give it a different cultural character.
  • The main advantage is affordable housing without dropping to small-town service levels.

The score ranks this region against other regions for the same occupation, not against other jobs here — a low score means it isn't a regional stronghold for that field, not that there are no vacancies. Counts online job advertisements, so trades and farm work hired by word of mouth are undercounted, and outside capital cities this is published at a regional level larger than one town.

Personal is one person's income; family and household cover everyone living together — a single-income household will show a lower household figure than its highest earner's personal one. Personal income also covers every resident aged 15 and over, retirees included, so it reads low in a town with an older population even where household income is solid.
