Gerringong is one of those places where dairy-green hills and the Pacific sit in the same view, and the town’s character comes from that overlap. Around 4,200 people live here, the median age is 46 and population growth has been almost flat since 2016.
The community is small enough to feel local, yet schools and healthcare are strong, while the beach is effectively on the doorstep. Werri Beach, the coastal walk and nearby farms and wineries mean weekends can move easily between surf and countryside without a long drive.
Housing, however, carries a substantial South Coast premium, with a median around $1.78 million. Shopping is limited compared with larger nearby centres, and people needing a broader job market will usually look beyond town. Tourism is noticeable and can change the feel of the main streets during busy periods, but Gerringong remains more residential than major holiday destinations.
Sydney is about two hours away and the airport a little under that, making occasional city trips realistic without turning the town into a commuter suburb. Gerringong suits people who want a small coastal community with a genuine country backdrop and are comfortable paying for that combination while driving elsewhere for some work, retail and specialist needs.
