Overview

Cape Tribulation is one of the most uncompromising lifestyle moves among the towns we cover. Only about 120 people live here; even with growth of roughly 8% since 2016, the settlement remains extremely small. Rainforest meets the sea here, so beaches, wildlife, rivers and the Wet Tropics dominate the environment, while tourism is huge relative to the resident base.

The climate is hot and exceptionally wet, with an average daytime temperature close to 30°C and very high rainfall. The practical constraints are serious: local schooling is primary level only, healthcare is limited, the nearest major hospital is about 1 hour 20 minutes away and the airport is more than 2 hours 30 minutes away.

Internet is satellite rather than fixed line. Brisbane is over 23 hours away by road. A median house price around $570,000 may look low compared with many coastal towns, but it comes with a level of remoteness that changes ordinary life completely. Cape Tribulation suits people who actively want isolation and can organise work, family and healthcare around it.

For anyone dependent on frequent services, conventional schooling or easy travel, the landscape is extraordinary but the logistics are likely to become the deciding factor.

Is Cape Tribulation for you?

Best for

Rainforest, reef and quiet need to outrank almost every form of convenience for Cape Tribulation to work as a home. Nature-focused remote workers, tourism operators and adventurous couples are the clearest match. Services are very limited, so local schooling, healthcare access and a conventional town centre cannot be treated as normal parts of day-to-day life.

Watch out for

Primary schooling is the local limit, the hospital is around 79 minutes away and the settlement is highly car-dependent. The climate is both hot and very wet, and tourism is intense relative to the tiny permanent population. This is unsuitable for anyone who needs routine access to major services.

How it compares to similar towns

  • Mission Beach is remote and tropical, but Cape Tribulation goes much further into isolation and has far thinner services.
  • Port Douglas has restaurants, walkability and much easier healthcare access.
  • Cape Tribulation gives those things up for far greater seclusion and direct immersion in the Wet Tropics landscape.

The score ranks this region against other regions for the same occupation, not against other jobs here — a low score means it isn't a regional stronghold for that field, not that there are no vacancies. Counts online job advertisements, so trades and farm work hired by word of mouth are undercounted, and outside capital cities this is published at a regional level larger than one town.

Personal is one person's income; family and household cover everyone living together — a single-income household will show a lower household figure than its highest earner's personal one. Personal income also covers every resident aged 15 and over, retirees included, so it reads low in a town with an older population even where household income is solid.
